Code Compliance

Every repair meets California fire-safety code.

The State of California and local jurisdictions have given us numerous building and fire-safety codes — many of which apply when repairing, modifying and installing chimneys and fireplaces. Our crews are fully trained on these codes, and we guarantee all our work is in strict compliance. Here’s an overview of the repairs we offer.

Masonry & Tuckpointing

Brick replacement & tuckpointing

When chimney bricks and mortar are failing, water can move in. This can cause deterioration of the masonry along with serious damage to interior areas of the chimney, the roof and other parts of the home.

We replace damaged bricks and use a process called “tuckpointing” to replace crumbling mortar — matching the color and consistency so the chimney looks original once the scaffolding comes down.

Crown Repair

Chimney crown repair & rebuilding

A cracked chimney crown will allow water into the chimney system. This can eventually lead to widespread deterioration within the system and the growth of dangerous mold.

Minor cracks in a chimney crown can sometimes be filled in. However, heavy crown damage usually requires rebuilding. We pour a new crown with the correct overhang and drip edge — the way it should have been built the first time.

Flashing

Chimney flashing repair & replacement

Chimney flashing seals the gap between the chimney and the roof. When flashing is rusted out, unseated or warped, water can move down into the home.

Some flashing problems can be repaired. Typically, though, we’ll recommend having the flashing replaced — counter-flashed into fresh mortar joints and sealed to last.

Liners

Chimney relining

A damaged or missing flue liner is one of the most serious problems a chimney can have — it allows heat, smoke and carbon monoxide to move into the structure of the home. We reline with stainless steel for wood, or with UL-listed flexible liners for gas conversions.

Every relining we perform is sized per the appliance manual and sealed at top and bottom to current code.

Smoke Chamber

Smoke chamber parging

The smoke chamber just above your firebox is designed to funnel smoke up into the flue. Damage to the chamber’s surfaces can allow heat and combustion gases to escape. Ragged edges in the chamber will collect large amounts of creosote, which is highly flammable.

We use a spray called Smoktite to parge smoke chambers. This seals cracks and holes and smooths out the surfaces — which dramatically improves draft at the same time.

Firebox

Firebox repair & rebuilding

Cracks in a firebox’s refractory panels can lead to a house fire and allow carbon monoxide and other gases to move into the home. We can repair minor firebox damage. If the panels are severely damaged, we’ll replace them — with manufacturer-spec refractory for factory-built fireplaces, or with firebrick and refractory mortar for masonry.

Rebuild

Full chimney rebuilding

Chimneys in serious decay often need to be rebuilt eventually. Chimney rebuilding can focus on specific sections within the structure or the entire structure from the roof up. Our masons know how to rebuild your chimney in a way that restores safety and efficient performance — while making the structure look aesthetically pleasing atop your roof.
